A few months ago, a video clip was released in social media showing Hijazi teaching the recitation of Surah Yasin of the Quran along with the sound of Oud- a musical instrument.

A lawyer lodged a complaint against Hijazi, accusing him of desecrating the Holy Book and Islam.

A court in the country has now sentenced the composer to six months in jail.

The verdict was issued on Sunday, with the court allowing Hijazi to pay 2,000 Egyptian pounds to stay out of jail pending the final outcome of the case.

The video clip, released in August 2023, drew widespread anger and criticism among social media users, with Al-Azhar Islamic Center and Egypt’s Association of Quran Reciters condemning Hijazi’s move.

Following the fallout, Hijazi issued a statement, apologizing to the people of Egypt, Al-Azhar, the reciters’ association and all Muslims.
