KUALA LUMPUR (IQNA) – Sofizah Mousin who bagged the top prize in Malaysia’s 62nd international Quran competition said it was her first participation in an international Quranic event.

At the closing ceremony on Monday, Mousin, who is from the host country was announced the top winner the women’s section of the competition.

She told IQNA that she has attended several Quran contests at the local and national level in Malaysia but it was her first appearance in an international Quranic event.

Mousin noted that according to the draw, she recited verses from Surah Yunus of the Holy Quran at the contest.

“Fortunately, I managed to have a good performance,” she added.

Asked about the level of the contenders, she said all of them were good and did their best in the international event.

The 33-year-old woman, who is a teacher, also said she got interested in Quran recitation at the age of 13 and began learning it at the same age.

The final round of the 62nd edition of Malaysia’s international Holy Quran competition, officially known as Malaysia International Al-Quran Recital and Memorization Assembly (MTHQA), was held at the KLCC from October 19 to 24.

Thirsty-six male and female qaris from 27 countries competed in the final round.

The contest was organized after a two-year break due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Only the recitation category was contested this time, with the memorization category expected to return next year.
