Nat’l Holy Quran Week Opens in Algeria
According to Algeria News Agency, the opening ceremony of the event was attended by a number of religious and cultural figures, government officials and foreign diplomats.
Algeria’s President Bouteflika, in a message to the program read by the adviser to the president, Mohamed Ali Boughazi, called for more efforts to defend Islam, "which is today, deliberately and unfairly, targeted by certain hostile spheres, within societies who have little knowledge about this religion."
"Its moderate message is the best evidence of the nobleness of Islam and its rejection of all forms of violence and extremism, especially bloodshed and terrorist crimes,” the Algerian head of state said.
During the event, organized by the North African country’s Ministry of Religious Affairs, lectures will be given about the Holy Quran.
Quran recitation and memorization contests are also planned to be held during the event, which will pay tribute to Mohamed Cherif Kahar, a Quran expert and the head of the Fatwa Committee of Algeria’s Supreme Islamic Council who passed away last Friday.
"Moderation, a Moral Value,” is the motto of this edition of the Quran week programs, which will run until December 29 at Dar el Imam Institute in Algiers.
