TEHRAN (IQNA) – Egyptian activists, politicians and listeners have called for a ban on commercial ads on the country’s Quran Radio.

They say the commercials tarnish the spirituality that should dominate the radio station’s programs, Al Jazeera reported.

Ulfat al-Mizlawi, a member of parliament, is among those seeking a ban of commercials, saying the Quranic atmosphere of the radio’s programs should not be undermined by ads.

What people watch and listen to on other TV and radio stations is different from what they listen to on the Quran Radio, Mizlawi said.

Ammar Ali Hassan, an author, said the mission of the Quran Radio is quenching the listeners’ spiritual thirst and running ads on the radio is not in line with this objective.

Also, Yahya Sayyed an-Najjar, a Twitter user, wrote in a tweet that running commercial ads on the Quran radio is insulting sanctities.

The Quran Radio is a popular radio station in the country, with many Egyptians listening to the recitations, speeches and Quran interpretation programs broadcast on it.

According to a survey conducted by the Arab country’s Center for Media Studies and Public Opinion in late 2020, it is the second most popular radio station in Egypt

Running ads on the radio began in 2014. In that year, the Union of Radio and TV Stations said it has received many requests from different companies for running ads on the Quran Radio, which has a large number of listeners.

Egypt is a country in North Africa with a population of around 100 million. Muslims account for around 90 percent of the country’s total population.

Quranic activities are very common in the Muslim-majority Arab country and many of the Muslim world’s top Qaris in the past and present have been Egyptian.
