TEHRAN (IQNA) – A prominent Lebanese Quran reciter said the mismanagement and shortcomings of the Saudi authorities in running Hajj was obvious in the tragic crush in Mina that killed hundreds of pilgrims.

Speaking to IQNA, Hussein Hamdan said Saudi Arabia does not attach much importance to the Hajj rituals and proper running of the annual event.

It is clear that the tragic event is the result of the Saudi officials’ negligence, he stated.

If there had been better planning for Hajj, this disaster would not have happened, the Lebanese Quranic figure added.

He underlined that international Islamic bodies, especially the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) should take a unified and serious decision about the Mina tragedy.

About 2000 pilgrims were killed in the Thursday crush in Mina, near Makkah, when performing religious rites.

With the death toll rising, many pilgrims are still unaccounted for in the incident that marked the worst Hajj disaster in 25 years.

So far, 226 Iranian pilgrims have been pronounced dead while many Iranian nationals who went missing after the tragedy are still unaccounted for.

Hamdan said the OIC should send a fact-finding mission to Saudi Arabia to investigate into the causes of the tragedy.

The Arab and Muslim Ummah must take the right approach towards such incidents to prevent them from happening in the future, the Lebanese Quran reciter went on to say.
