TEHRAN (IQNA) – An exhibition of manuscript copies of the Holy Quran was launched in the Yemeni capital of Sana’a on Saturday.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Mohammad Ali al-Houthi, member of Yemen’s Supreme Political Council, Sabanet website reported.

He hailed the event and said it shows the important position of cultural heritage among Yemeni people.  

The Kifl Development Fund has organized the exhibition in cooperation with the library of the Sana’a Grand Mosque and the Manuscripts Center affiliated to the Ministry of Culture and with the support of the country’s Awqaf Department and the Quran Teaching charity society.

The five-day expo showcases 39 handwritten copies of the Quran written on paper and 26 manuscripts written on parchment.  

They date back to different periods in Islamic history and demonstrate the Yemeni people’s efforts to protect Quran manuscripts.

The exhibition also displays the developments in handwriting the Quran in Yemen as well as the scripts, styles, and decorations.

Yasser Abu Humaila, director of the expo, said it shows the religious identity of Yemenis and the prominent status of the Quran for the people of Yemen in history.

He added that the exhibition has been organized ahead of the holy month of Ramadan with the aim of responding to Westerners’ insults to the Quran.
