Annual Quran Contest Held in Ukraine

TEHRAN (IQNA) – A Quran competition was held in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, on the weekend.

 

According to Ukrania Press website, Ukrainian Muslims as well as Muslims residing in the Eastern European country took part in the contest, which is held annually.

The mosque of Kiev Islamic Cultural Center hosted the Quranic event.

It was organized by the All-Ukrainian Association of Social Organizations (Alraid) under the supervision of the Ukrainian Muslims’ Religious Affairs Department, Muslim World League, and a number of other institutions.

As many as 80 Quran activists aged 6 to 40 took part in the competition. Half of the contenders were women.

The number of the participants this year was 20 percent higher than those attending last year’s competition.  

Ukraine is a European country which became independent after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.

According to official estimates, 500,000 Muslims live in Ukraine but some say the number is over 1.5 million.
